Gyeongju was the capital of the ancient Silla dynasty from 57 BC. BC to AD 935, which ruled roughly two-thirds of the Korean peninsula for nearly a thousand years. Later on, Silla was a wealthy country and its capital, Gyeongju, was the fourth largest city in the world. The many important historical places have helped make Gyeongju one of the most popular travel destinations in South Korea.

Today, Gyeongju is a typical medium-sized city that follows the demographic, economic and social trends of modern South Korea. Nevertheless, the big city has retained its special identity, which is also due to the fact that no high-rise buildings are allowed to be built in the city center. These can be found in the Bomunho Resort a bit away from the city, where several large hotels and an amusement park have been built. In terms of tourism, due to the large number of historical sites, Gyeongju is one of the most famous destinations in South Korea.
